PCOS just got a new name. Here's what PMOS actually means.
If you have PCOS, you probably haven't heard this yet — most people haven't. In May 2026, the condition you know as polycystic ovary syndrome was formally renamed. The new term is Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, or PMOS. One letter different. A genuinely different way of thinking about your body.
This isn't a rebrand or a marketing exercise. It's the result of a consensus process that ran for over a decade, coordinated across dozens of medical organisations worldwide, and published in one of the most rigorously reviewed medical journals that exists. Here's what actually happened, why it happened, and — more importantly — what it means for you specifically.
What actually happened
On May 12, 2026, a consensus paper led by Professor Helena Teede was published in The Lancet, formally renaming PCOS to PMOS. The process behind it ran for roughly 14 years and involved 56 medical and patient organisations, drawing on survey responses from more than 14,000 patients and health professionals across multiple world regions. The rollout is planned over three years, updating clinical guidelines used in 195 countries.
Support for the change was broad: roughly 86% of patients and 71% of clinicians surveyed backed it. That's a rare level of agreement in medicine.
Why the name was wrong in the first place
"Polycystic ovary syndrome" tells you where doctors thought the problem lived — in cysts on your ovaries. But the fluid-filled follicles seen on an ultrasound aren't actually pathological cysts, and for a lot of women, they're not even the main issue. The old name pointed at the wrong organ and, in doing so, missed most of what's actually happening in the body.
PMOS reframes the condition around what the research has shown for years: this is a whole-body endocrine and metabolic disorder, not an ovary problem. It affects insulin signalling, inflammation, adrenal function, cardiometabolic risk, mental health, and skin — often with the ovaries being more of a downstream symptom than the root cause.
What this means for your day-to-day care
Practically, not much changes overnight. Medical records, insurance forms, and prescriptions will likely still say "PCOS" for a long time — name changes in medicine roll out slowly, and this one is planned as a three-year process. Your diagnosis, your existing test results, and your current treatment plan don't need to be redone.
The four root causes behind the new name
This is the part that actually changes what you do next. The research behind PMOS points to at least four distinct metabolic and endocrine patterns that produce PCOS-type symptoms — commonly grouped as Insulin-Resistant, Inflammatory, Adrenal, and Post-Pill. Each has a different underlying driver, and — critically — each responds to a different approach. What helps insulin-resistant PCOS can make adrenal PCOS worse. What works for inflammatory PCOS looks almost nothing like what works for post-pill PCOS.
